About Us

Saunders & Ward is a third-generation family owned business entrenched with engineering history. Bert Saunders, grandfather of today’s owners Nick and Jamie Saunders, was a British engineer working in India for Vickers Ltd on various hydroelectric power schemes at the beginning of the 20th century.

Later Bert moved to Tasmania after being appointed as a project engineer for the construction of the original Electrolytic Zinc Company, in Hobart.

In 1922 Bert and business partner Victor Ward bought A.B. Buyers Engineers in Montpelier Retreat, Hobart and founded Saunders & Ward. Victor Ward retired in 1929 leaving the business solely in the hands of the Saunders family. We are proud to be associated with one of the longest continuously running engineering companies in Australia.

Saunders & Ward began by servicing the marine sector and manufactured steam driven locomotives and winches for the timber industries. From humble beginnings, Saunders & Ward has grown to be the major steel fabrication and general engineering business in southern Tasmania. Saunders & Ward is now based in Kingston under the guidance of Nick and Jamie as Directors and Ben Rolliston as General Manager. Ben has many years’ experience in the engineering industry and is leading a dynamic team striving for excellence through continuous improvement, investment in technology and our people.

Our company operates state of the art facilities specialising in the manufacture, refurbishment, repair, erection/installation and maintenance of specialist equipment to the power generation, mining, minerals processing, aquaculture, water & sewage and general engineering industries.

From its inception to the present day our company has established a reputation for performing a wide range of steel fabrication and general engineering work to strict quality and performance guidelines.
